Mercedes EQB could be the EV that luxury buyers Are Looking for

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the EQB, a five- or seven-passenger all-electric SUV aimed at families.

Unveiled today at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show, the EQB will be available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants, with several battery pack options. It will also offer 60 cubic feet of trunk space in much the same way as the Mercedes-Benz GLB SUV, and can be widened further by making the third row of seats flush with the floor.

For now, there are two power variants, the EQB 250 and EQB 350, but Mercedes says more are planned: the EQB 250 has 187 bhp, a 66 kWh battery, and a projected range of around 260 miles.

The more powerful EQB 350 edition will likely have around 240 bhp thanks to a larger battery pack. The German automaker has stated that it is also planning a long-range model in the near future, with DC fast charging at up to 100 kW, equivalent to 10-80% in about 30 minutes, and AC on-board charging at up to 11 kW.

Despite all this capacity, the rearmost seats are said to be suitable for occupants no larger than 5'4", which may limit its potential somewhat. Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz has also paid attention to the interior styling, with the dashboard dominated by a screen in front of the driver and an abundance of air vents.

Onboard safety features include removable headrests and side window bags to protect occupants in the third-row seats. Driver assistance features include active lane keeping, brake assist, and alerts for pedestrians and cyclists.

Along with a comfortable interior equipped with the Mercedes-Benz MBUX infotainment system, the EQB is also gorgeous on the outside.

The multi-spoke aluminum in two- or three-color finishes up to 20 inches is very lively, and LED taillights and roof rails complete the dynamic styling.

Currently, the Mercedes-Benz EQB is destined for the Chinese market, where the first models will be produced. Vehicles for the European market and further afield will be assembled at a plant in Hungary. The new car will be introduced in the U.S. next year; pricing has not yet been announced.
