iPad Pro2021 Leak Tips on thicker Tablets — Thanks to Killer Upgrade

Ahead of Apple's Spring Loaded event, iPad rumors keep coming in.

This one comes from MacRumors, which sent us dimensions from an iPad accessory manufacturer: the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be 280.65 mm (11.04 inches) long, 125 mm (8.46 inches) wide, and 6.4 mm (0.25 inches) thick. 11-inch model will be 247.6 mm (9.74") x 178.5 mm (7.02") x 5.9 mm (0.23").

You may have noticed that the 12.9-inch model is half as thick as the 11-inch iPad Pro and the previous 12.9-inch model (both 5.9 mm thick). Typically, Apple prides itself on offering the thinnest device possible, so adding extra thickness is rare, and usually only when there is an important reason to do so.

MacRumors speculates that the change may be to accommodate the mini LED display, a feature exclusive to the new 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2021. In any case, the 0.5mm/0.01" difference will not be a concern for most people.

MacRumors also claims that there will be a change in the size of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro's camera bump, which at 27.67mm square means it will be slightly larger than the previous model's 27mm square.

Nevertheless, the camera bump on the 11-inch iPad Pro may be smaller at 25.3 mm square compared to 26.7 mm square on the previous version.

These are relatively minor changes in the grand scheme of things, but they show that the iPad Pro series is constantly evolving. It is not yet clear if there will be any difference in performance.

However, the inclusion of the mini LEDs will be the most significant upgrade in recent Apple history. It will improve image quality, increasing color and contrast, as well as significantly improving power efficiency. Therefore, the slight increase in thickness is fairly inconsequential in the long run.

Other changes rumored to be coming to the iPad Pro 2021 series include an upgraded Apple Pencil 3, a Thunderbolt connector, and an entirely new chipset. Rumors are split, however, as to whether this chipset will be the A14X Bionic or a new one that promises to rival the Apple M1 chip found in the Cupertino Mac series.

We'll find out for sure later today when the Apple Spring Loaded event kicks off at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT / 6 p.m. BST.
