Toyota BZ4X concept SUV looks wild, but can you ride Tesla?

At the Shanghai Motor Show, Toyota unveiled the bZ4X concept, the company's first EV based on the e-TNGA electric vehicle architecture developed in collaboration with Subaru.

Taking much of its design inspiration from Toyota's RAV4, the concept features large black wheel arches that blend into the fenders, aggressive angles, and a snarling Tesla Model X-like front face

The bZ4X is an all-wheel drive design electric SUV, part of Toyota's Beyond Zero initiative, which aims to be carbon neutral by 2050.

"The Toyota bZ4X concept points to yet another option in our already robust electrification portfolio," said Bob Carter, TMNA vice president of sales, in a press release.

"With investments and product offerings across the electrification spectrum, we intend to be there with products and technologies that meet the diverse needs of our customers worldwide," he added.

As mentioned, the architecture was developed in collaboration with Japanese automaker Subaru. bZ4X SUV concept aims to build on Toyota's electrification prowess since the launch of the Prius in 1997 and Subaru's heritage as a four-wheel drive giant.

Unfortunately, Toyota did not release battery size, range, or performance metrics. Therefore, it is unclear how much Elon Musk and Tesla need to fear Toyota's entry into the EV market. However, if Toyota can bring a similar range to the Model X and Y, its pedigree as a high-quality automaker should attract longtime fans to switch to electric vehicles.

Other design features of Toyota's concept include a long wheelbase with shorter overhangs for more interior space and an open concept interior with a large screen on the dashboard. Toyota did not mention the type of interior materials used, but it is likely that vegan leather or other eco-friendly textiles will be used, similar to the Mazda MX-30 EV 2022.

It's not just SUVs. Toyota also plans EV sedans and trucks. Toyota plans to release a total of 70 electrified vehicles by 2025, 15 of which will be fully electric.

The Toyota bZ4X will be manufactured in both Japan and China and will go on sale worldwide in mid-2022.
