Audi has unveiled the A6 E-tron Concept, a tech-laden luxury sedan and electric car that includes the ability to project video games onto walls. Yes, really.

Unveiled today at the 2021 Shanghai Motor Show, the A6 E-tron is based on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) chassis architecture that Audi is developing with Porsche. The production version of this car will likely not be available until after 2022, but development is well underway and the car you see here should not be miles away from the final version.

The A6 E-Tron concept has a range of about 435 miles and is powered by a 100 kWh battery.

With motors at each axle, the Audi A6 E-tron, which has a total output of 469 bhp and a maximum torque of 590 lb ft, should also have a quick 0-62 mph time of under 4 seconds. However, Audi is also planning a PPE-based model with a single motor on the rear axle to reduce energy efficiency and price.

The versatile PPE structure will allow the battery pack to be distributed more efficiently across the chassis area, with less intrusion into the passenger compartment. This makes it suitable for both tall SUVs and low-height models, such as the one Porsche is using for its Macan EV electric vehicle, which is scheduled for launch in 2033.

The A6 E-tron hatchback design is 4.96 meters (195.2 inches) long, 1.96 meters (77.1 inches) wide, and 1.44 meters (56.7 inches) tall, with a very low drag coefficient of 0.22Cd. It is comparable in size to the Audi A7 Sportback.

A standout exterior feature is the digital matrix LED headlights. Audi suggests that owners can use this technology to pass the time by playing video games or watching movies while parked against a wall while charging. Audi has even developed a game that can be played on a smartphone to show how this concept works.

Four more LED projectors are placed at the four corners of the car to illuminate the road with animated turn signals. The OLED technology in the taillights promises further electrical tricks, and there are additional projectors that are switched on when the doors are opened. These projectors, Audi suggests, could be used to greet passengers when the doors are opened or to warn passing cyclists.

Striking 22-inch wheels and a light-reflecting Helio Silver exterior finish round out the glamorous exterior lines. In another attempt to increase energy efficiency, the special paint is said to block a significant percentage of the thermal radiation contained in sunlight, which may reduce the need for occupants to use energy-wasting air conditioning.

Audi plans to use the versatile PPE platform in a series of new cars, with the first production models coming late next year. The German manufacturer also has ambitious plans to bring 20 fully electric vehicle models to market by 2025, and the PPE architecture will likely be used in its series of B, C, and D-segment vehicles.
