Audi Q4e-tron announced — and it undercuts the Tesla model Y

Audi has unveiled the Q4 e-tron, a new all-electric crossover that starts at $45,000, well below the Tesla Model Y. Audi's more affordable EV will debut in the U.S. later this year.

With the Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron, Audi plans to bring more EVs to market than any other U.S. luxury brand.

The 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron has a somewhat peculiar appearance for a crossover EV. It has a round, bulging hood that looks as if it has an engine under it. Inside, however, there are not a V8 engine but two electric motors.

Audi calls this design "muscular surfacing" and an "athletic stance." Inside, like the Mazda MX-30, the car boasts the use of recycled materials. Audi also goes out of its way to emphasize the amount of water bottle storage.

According to Audi, the interior space is also spacious. It is the same size as Audi's Q5 SUV. And like the Tesla one, it has a 10.1-inch touch display, but the Audi will have significantly more buttons.

The Q4 e-tron's battery, like most EVs, is located at the bottom between the axles to lower the center of gravity. Although the exact battery size is small at 82 kWh, Audi gives the Q4 e-tron a range of 250 miles.

In fact, there is a smaller battery option, a 55 kWh model, which is likely intended for a sticker price of $45,000 and up. Tesla's long-range Model Y has a range of 326 miles. However, the Model Y is slightly more expensive, starting at $50,490.

It should be noted that Audi gets these range estimates from the European WLTP test cycle, which is more relaxed than the U.S. test; if the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) does some work on this car, the range will not be so robust.

Like Tesla and the Mustang Mach E, Audi is bringing a few toys to the EV Pony Show. These include an augmented reality heads-up display that was unveiled last month.

The Audi Q4 e-tron will go on sale in Europe this June and will be introduced worldwide by the end of the year.
