Oculus Quest2 currently offers 120hz refresh rate and wireless PC streaming

If you want the best VR headset, look no further than the Oculus Quest 2. And it just got even better with a new update that brings some great upgrades.

The Quest 2 v28 update brings official support for 120Hz refresh rates, several other tweaks, and most notably, wireless streaming from a PC.

Let's start with the refresh rate improvements. By default, Quest 2 runs at 90Hz. However, with the v28 update, users will be able to toggle a refresh rate of 120Hz, which will benefit Oculus Store apps that are configured to run at 120Hz. No such app currently exists, but the Oculus team said they expect it to appear in the future.

One thing to remember is that the Quest 2 system software will remain at 90Hz. However, the Oculus Link for connecting the headset to a gaming PC will be updated to 120Hz in a future release, not this one.

"Our goal is to continue to unlock new capabilities of the Quest 2 hardware. We expect that 120Hz and 90Hz support will benefit games that rely on quick and fast styles of movement the most. Meanwhile, for many other apps, 72Hz mode will continue to be a great choice for a smooth and comfortable experience," the Oculus team explained in a blog post.

While higher refresh rates are a good thing, Air Link for Quest 2 is arguably the more exciting update. It will allow users to stream games and content wirelessly from their PCs, eliminating the need to use the optional Oculus Link cable. This should pave the way for a more immersive virtual reality experience, as the risk of cable tangling will be eliminated.

With the v28 update, Air Link will become Quest 2's "Experimental" beta mode, accessible through the Oculus PC app. And it is worth remembering that a strong Wi-Fi connection is required to take full advantage of it.

"If you want to charge the headset during your VR experience, experience the highest fidelity visuals possible, or if the available Wi-Fi network is congested or insecure, Link via USB-C cable is recommended," Oculus states. If you have a strong and secure Wi-Fi network and your play space is ideally within approximately 20 feet of a WiFi router, then Air Link is a good option."

Other upgrades that accompany the software update include the ability to bring your own desk into the VR environment. This would place a virtual desk on top of an existing desk to mimic its position in the real world. The user can then sit in front of that desk in the virtual Oculus Home environment.

In addition, a physical keyboard can be paired with the Quest 2 to make the system's navigation interface and input into the home environment easier; since Oculus has a partnership with Logitech, the keyboard is a Logitech K830 but more Bluetooth keyboards will be supported in the future.

Overall, this quartet of upgrades appears to increase the appeal of the Oculus Quest 2 for current and future users. If you want a copy, see our guide to where to buy Oculus Quest 2.
