Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2 or Z Flip 3? We may finally have the answer

What will Samsung's next clamshell foldable be called: will it be the Galaxy Z Flip 2 or the Galaxy Z Flip 3? Both have been suggested, and now we may have the answer.

According to sources who spoke to Let'sGoDigital, Samsung will jump over the number "2" and jump straight to the Galaxy Z Flip 3. That would make it the same number as the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which will be released around the same time.

Samsung has long preferred to line up its flagships with matching names: in 2016, it skipped the number 6 and launched the Galaxy Note 7, matching it with the Galaxy S7, which launched earlier that year. The Note 7 turned out to be an undeniable flop, but the numbering convention stuck.

Now Samsung seems to be doing the same thing with its foldable product line. The reason for this is not clear, but Let'sGoDigital speculates that it may be to avoid people mistaking the Z Flip 2 for an older model than the Z Fold 3.

One could also assume that the new model will be the third in the series, following the original Galaxy Z Flip and the Z Flip 5G. However, that is a stretch, as the only major changes are the inclusion of 5G connectivity and a slightly more powerful chipset.

Really, there is no need to make so much sense of Samsung's phone naming convention. If we wanted to, we could name it the Galaxy Z Flip 28, but that would be a bit unexpected.

At this point, not much is known about the Galaxy Z Flip 3, except that it could improve on what the Z Flip and Z Flip 5G have achieved. The design is expected to retain the aesthetics of the previous model's clamshell-style flip phone, but is rumored to feature an upgraded hinge and ultra-thin glass.

The Z Fold 3 is similarly shrouded in mystery, although recent reports suggest that it will have a slightly smaller battery than the previous model. Nevertheless, it is expected to come with an S Pen, and the S Pen will slot into the phone, which may account for the reduced capacity.

Both models are currently expected to be available in July, at which point the naming issue will be put to rest.
