Nearly eight years after Disney's initial announcement, a release date has finally been set. As confirmed by a recent trailer, Cruella will be released in US and UK cinemas on May 28, 2021.

The film was originally slated for release in December 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic.

And like Black Widow, Cruella will be released in theaters as well as through Disney Plus Premiere Access.

This means that you will likely pay $30 in addition to the regular Disney Plus monthly fee of $7, which is the same price as Raya The Last Dragon and the live-action Mulan remake.

In 2016, it was announced that Emma Stone, star of La La Land herself, would play Cruella de Vil, one of the most iconic villains in the Disney universe.

Disney later also announced that Academy Award winner Emma Thompson would play the other lead role as the Baroness.

The official trailer for Cruella was released on February 17, 2021. Since then, it has been viewed nearly 10 million times on YouTube.

Initially, the trailer shows a young redhead, Cruella de Ville, entering a clothing store in 1970s Central London, where she presumably meets a baroness. As the film progresses, however, Cruella gradually descends into madness, becoming more eccentric and rocking her iconic black and white look at what appears to be an upper-class social event.

And given that the trailer includes several shots of Cruella hotwiring cars and engaging in high-speed car chases, it seems that things are not going so well for Cruella. Not to mention a shot of him riding off on a scooter in tears.

Another sneak peek (aka a second trailer) was played during the Grammys, showing a young Cruella in a new Vivienne Westwood-esque way; in one minute of footage, Disney managed to give us more fashion and punk vibes than we could have imagined. We saw the main character at rock bottom, working as a maid, literally trampled by people. We saw Cruella's drive and passion for personal design to dive into the cruel (pun intended) world of fashion. This sneak peek definitely echoes "The Devil Wears Prada," and those of us who know that Aline Brosh McKenna wrote an early draft of the film are not surprised, but we'll get to that in a moment.

According to Disney's announcement, Cruella's film is set in 1970s London, "amidst the punk rock revolution," and con artist Estella (played by Emma Stone) is "determined to make a name for herself with her designs."

The girl becomes friends with a couple of thieves who are also "mischievous." This lovely group then goes on to lead adventurous lives in London.

"One day, Estella's fashion sense catches the eye of Baroness von Hermann, a legendary figure in the fashion world who is destructively chic and frighteningly exclusive. But their relationship triggers events and revelations that cause Estella to develop a wicked side and become the boisterous, fashionable, and vengeful Cruella.

And while it has already been confirmed that the new Cruella will be a prequel to 101 Dalmatians rather than a reboot, Disney has yet to reveal a timeline; judging from the much older version of Cruella seen in 101 Dalmatians, the new Cruella could be at least 20 years removed from the original Disney animated film.

If so, it is highly unlikely that lovable characters like Roger, Pongo, Perdita, and the adorable 15 puppies will appear. What is curious is the inclusion of Emily Beecham as Anita (one of the main characters in 101 Doggies) in the cast list. We were not surprised to hear that [The Devil Wears Prada] screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna wrote an early draft of the script before handing it off to [Fifty Shades of Grey's] Kelly Marcel.

Screenplay writing was then passed on to Jez Butterworth for "Ford vs Ferrari," Dana Fox for "How to Be Single," Steve Zisis for "Togetherness," and Tony McNamara for "Favourite."

According to a December 2018 announcement, the Cruella film will be directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya). It was also confirmed that Kristin Barr ("Christopher Robin," 2018) will produce along with Marc Platt ("La La Land," 2016) and Andrew Gunn.
