The design of the iPhone13 has just leaked, and the notch is so small

As the launch of the iPhone 13 approaches, we naturally expect to see design leaks from the manufacturing process, whether from smartphone accessory makers or others who have obtained prototypes.

In this case, it appears that someone has obtained images of iPhone accessories, particularly screen protectors; Twitter user DuanRui has not stated where he obtained the images, but claims they are "film samples" for the iPhone 13.

The alleged iPhone 13 screen protector suggests that the upcoming phone will feature a smaller notch than the iPhone 12 lineup. It will be about the same height as the existing iPhone notch, but not as wide.

9to5Mac claims that the width of the notch in this iPhone 13 leak is "about 30% smaller" than the iPhone 12 notch.

Apple has made little effort to shrink the notch on its iPhones since the notch first appeared on the iPhone X. Instead, it has managed to cram components such as a high-resolution camera, earphone speakers, and the infamous Face ID biometric sensor into the notch.

According to this image from Twitter, Apple has lifted the earpiece from the center of the notch to the top bezel of the iPhone. This practical design change will place the additional components closer together, rather than on either side of the earpiece as in current iPhone models.

This is not the first time we have seen these screens leaked online. Last month MacRumors shared a set of images from Greek repair provider iRepair showing three different iPhone 13 panels for the 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch displays. These panels also have the earphones positioned in the upper bezel.

While it would be nice if Apple could get rid of the notch altogether (it looks like the iPhone is still a few iterations away from a completely notch-free design), the notch reduction is good news. It means more screen real estate for FaceTime calls, video viewing, etc.

That said, we don't know if these iPhone 13 display and screen protectors are legitimate. While it is true that case manufacturers often obtain dummy iPhone models in advance of launch to develop iPhone accessories, Apple will probably not reach final production for several months. Typically, production of new iPhones begins in the summer.

What else do we know about the iPhone 13 design? It is rumored to feature a number of upgrades, including a newer A15 Bionic chip, improved cameras, and a 120Hz display on the Pro model.

None of this is confirmed, of course. Fortunately, there should be more iPhone 13 leaks between now and the scheduled September release date. Until then, we urge you to follow Apple's coverage of the April event and WWDC 2021.
