Polestar announced that it is expanding its lineup of Polestar 2 electric vehicles to include three new variants.

The once one-of-a-kind Polestar 2 is now available in three variants, offering single or dual-motor powertrains and a choice of long-range or standard-range batteries. If you want a well-equipped electric car at a reasonable price, the front-wheel drive model with a standard battery pack is the way to go. Prices start at £39,900. Prices in the U.S. have not yet been revealed, but are around $54,000.

The introduction of a single-motor model allows the Polestar 2 to be offered at a lower price without compromising on fit and finish. You still get a clean, seemingly Scandinavian-style electric car with a digital dashboard and spacious touchscreen center console. [Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, said, "2021 is the year that Polestar 2 really gains momentum. 'We've launched with a strong proposition that represents a great direction for the car. Now we are expanding our offerings with additional versions, while maintaining the unique design, premium quality, and enjoyable driving experience of each."

The Polestar 2 has been well received for its strong interior textures, clean appearance, and impressive EV performance. As other established automakers move toward electrification, the Polestar appears to be a competitor to Tesla, another EV pioneer.

The Polestar 2 is certainly a competitor to both the Tesla Model S and the less expensive Model 3. Just remember that while the Model S beats the Polestar 2 in range, the latter is considerably cheaper than the car built by Elon Musk's company.

Returning to the entry-level Polestar 2, the single-motor, standard range model has a 64 kWh battery with 224 hp and a range of 420 km (260 miles).

If you want to pay more, there is a long-range, single-motor model with a 78 kWh battery that delivers 231 hp and a maximum range of 540 km (335 miles). This is a car for those who want the best EV range at the low end of premium EVs.

Those seeking performance and a modest range can opt for a dual-motor, long-range battery model.

Given that Tom's Guide is a technology fan, it is worth noting that the Polestar 2 offers a series of options, led by the Plus Pack, which offers a Harman Kardon audio system, fully electric heated seats, and a full-length panoramic glass roof. It is worth noting that the The Pilot Pack adds driver assistance features such as pixel LED headlights and omnidirectional parking sensors.

However, as noted above, even if you don't make these options, you still get a car that is reasonably unique for any other EV. The standard equipment is not stingy either. Expect to see these new Polestar 2 models on US and UK roads by the end of 2021.
