This is all courtesy of AndroidNext, but fair warning: the rendered images are very low-resolution. Fortunately, there are previously leaked rendered images (such as the one above). It looks very similar to the previous Xperia 1 II model, but with a larger camera bump and a hole for selfies.
Unfortunately, the low-resolution nature of these renders makes it impossible to tell much more than that. For now, the rest of the leak focuses on the spec sheet.
As you might expect from a flagship, the Xperia 1 III features a Snapdragon 888 paired with 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage and a 4,500mAh battery. If these specs sound familiar, that's because they're on the top-of-the-line OnePlus 9 Pro.
But where the Xperia 1 III wants to differentiate itself is in its display. According to the spec sheet, it will feature a 6.5-inch 4K 120Hz screen. It is the first phone to offer something like this, and it remains to be seen how well it will work in practice.
The camera will have a 12.2 MP sensor for wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, and time-of-flight (ToF) photography. The front camera is 8 MP. Finally, the Xperia 1 III will likely support wireless charging with a 4,500mAh battery (up from 4,000mAh in the Xperia 1 II).
Sony has historically struggled with camera software and producing photos that rival the likes of Google and Apple.
Previous Xperia devices have had impressive spec sheets but have underperformed in real life. Each Xperia seems to come with some caveat: whether it's the asterisk next to the 4K display or the underwhelming photos, something is missing from Sony's phones. Sure, Sony is often first for many things, but being first is not always the best; take a look at past Xperia reviews, including the Xperia 5, Xperia 1, and Xperia 10.
The phone goes on sale tomorrow, April 14, so we'll hear the final details we need, including pricing and availability. Knowing Sony, this is going to be one expensive phone, especially with its 4K 120 Hz display.
