This long—lost Star Wars show is back - and it's headed for Disney Plus

Star Wars Detours, an unaired animated spoof Star Wars show, may make a surprise comeback next month on Disney Plus.

According to rumors (via CinemaBlend), Disney plans to release the series exclusively on the streaming platform as a surprise on Star Wars Day (aka May 4). This is sure to please most fans who had long since given up on the series ever seeing the light of day.

For those who don't know, Star Wars Detours is an animated comedy series set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. It was the result of a collaboration between George Lucas and Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, and promised to take a loving swipe at all things Star Wars. [Joel McHale, Kree Summer, Seth MacFarlane, Donald Faison, and even Weird Al Yankovic lent their vocal chords. Star Wars legends Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams were slated to reprise their roles as C-3PO and Lando Calrissian. [A trailer was released with the show's announcement in 2012, and it is now believed that there will be two seasons. That would tie in with this rumored detail that 52 completed episodes will be available at once on Disney Plus.

The show's demise was the result of Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012, when the House of Mouse shelved the show in favor of plans for the Star Wars franchise.

Fans have long held out hope that the series might one day be shown, and the renewal of the Detours trademark in 2018 suggested that Disney was not completely done.

Disney originally took a rather hardline approach to non-mainstream Star Wars projects, removing extended-world novels and series from the canon and canceling the much-anticipated video game "Star Wars: 1313" in the wake of the IP purchase. [For example, the "Star Wars: Ewoks" series and two live-action films focusing on the Ewoks have been added to Disney Plus in recent weeks; the return of "Star Wars Detours" is further will prove that Disney is loosening its grip on the franchise, at least a little.

For now, this is just a rumor, and it is quite possible that "Star Wars Detours" will never see the light of day. But if true, fans in a galaxy far, far away will be devouring the new (but old) show next month.
