Apple to Reinvent Apple TV with built-in Speakers and Cameras (Report)

Apple may be reinventing Apple TV. But instead of going head-to-head with the likes of Roku and Fire TV, the new Apple TV may be a streaming device, speaker, and video calling hub all in one device.

This is according to a new report from Bloomberg, which details what Apple has planned for its next gadget. The new Apple TV could be Apple's best streaming device yet, reviving its flagging smart home efforts.

The new set-top box is designed to offer everything that Apple TV and HomePod speakers already do in one device. That means you can watch videos, play games, listen to music, and use the Siri virtual assistant.

Additionally, the new Apple TV will have a built-in camera and may allow video calls through the TV. It would be similar to Facebook's Portal TV, which turns your living room TV into a Portal smart display. The difference is that you have full access to the Apple TV and the apps in it.

Interestingly, Bloomberg claims that this is not Apple's only plan for the smart home. The company is also considering the prospect of releasing an Apple smart display that would compete directly with Google's Nest Hub 2 and Amazon Echo Show 10.

Bloomberg claims that the device will "combine an iPad and HomePod speaker, as well as a camera for video chatting." The report also notes that the device will include "high-end speakers," suggesting that Apple is trying to stand out by offering a premium audio experience.

It will be interesting to hear what direction these devices take; the Apple TV box has not been upgraded in three years, and it is rumored that the Apple TV 2021 could arrive as early as this month.

We have heard little about the Apple TV 2021, but expect an upgraded remote control, a new more powerful processor, and more storage. It is unlikely that this ambitious hybrid will appear anytime soon, but it is possible that Apple will add an ultra-premium tier to its lineup of devices.
