Tops that take a Swing at MLB Nft — What You Need to Know

Trading card company Tops is jumping into NFT fever thanks to a new partnership with Major League Baseball, which will allow customers to purchase official MLB NFTs through the WAX blockchain beginning April 20.

According to Decrypt's Daniel Roberts, these NFTs will be offered through a partnership between MLB and MLB Players Inc. the for-profit arm of the MLB Players Association; on the WAX website, 50,000 standard packs at $5 per pack will be sold. The WAX website indicates that 50,000 standard packs at $5 per pack will be sold. There will also be $100 premium packs, featuring limited edition cards and more rare cards, which will produce $24,090. [NFT (non-fungible tokens) are cryptographic assets backed by the blockchain, which are digital goods but uniquely show ownership. In other words, like rare physical trading cards, NFTs are unique and cannot be duplicated.

While the majority of MLB NFTs are common, there are also Legendary cards and the very limited Legendary Platinum Commemorative cards, which are limited to one copy. These cards are likely to fetch high prices on the used market.

Unlike physical cards, Topps integrates motion graphics and other "digital touches" to provide an overall more attractive product.

Evan Kaplan, managing director of MLB Players, Inc. said in a press release, "As we enjoy the moment when collectibles break out with NFT and blockchain technology, we are honoring the legends of the past and paying tribute to the stars of today and breakout rookies, there is no better way to look forward to the great careers ahead. These Topps cards offer new and innovative ways for today's collectors and fans to connect with their favorite stars."

Topps is also giving away 10,000 NFT packs on opening day to those who sign up for email alerts on their website. Unfortunately, at the time of the announcement, these slots appear to be filled.

This is not the first time Topps has experimented with NFT. Last year, it launched its Garbage Pail Kids line, which sold out quickly. In the aftermarket, some of these NFTs have asking prices of $7,000 or more.

NBA Top Shots is a similar NFT marketplace; instead of sticking to the trading card format, the NBA has opted to monetize video of highlights and other in-game moments; in February, a LeBron James dunk sold for over $200,000! . Another dunk is currently for sale for $250,000.
