Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip2 are likely to launch on May 7 — here's why

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 2 may be coming sooner than expected. In fact, both models may appear sometime in July, rather than in late summer or early fall.

The new foldable phones were expected to launch at the time when the new Galaxy Note 21 would normally be expected to appear. However, according to Korean outlet The Elec, we may not have to wait that long.

This is much earlier than most expected. After all, we have already seen the leaked Samsung phone roadmap, which outlines the device's launch through August, with no mention of the new foldable. So either the plans have changed or one of these leaks is bogus.

Nevertheless, an earlier release makes sense. Samsung's Galaxy S21 series was released in early January instead of the usual late February release. It would not be too surprising if Samsung did the same with its late 2021 flagship.

In a normal year, the next Galaxy Note device might have been included, but 2021 is not a normal year. Not only are there rumors that the next Galaxy Note may be the last, but the phone may actually be delayed until next year due to the ongoing global chip shortage.

The only question is whether the two folderable phones will launch with the Galaxy S21 FE. The leaked roadmap already seems to confirm an August launch for that device, but it is unclear if it will be with anything else.

It makes sense for Samsung to announce all new large phones at the same time. But that's not even what happened last year, with the Galaxy S20 FE arriving almost two months after Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 series.

We will just have to wait and see what happens. If the Galaxy foldables are scheduled for a July release, we won't have to wait much longer. We should also be hearing a lot more about what these phones will offer in the coming weeks.

The Elec report revealed many of the specs we can expect from the Z Fold 3. The device will reportedly have a smaller 4,380mAh battery, a 7.5-inch internal display, and a 6.2-inch external display. Past rumors also suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will support the S Pen, like the newly released Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The Galaxy Z Flip 2 is set to feature the same battery as the original Z Flip and will naturally feature the same clamshell design as before. Beyond that, we don't know much about what this phone will offer.

Stay tuned for Tom's Guide. We'll bring you the latest Galaxy news as the launch of these two foldable phones approaches.
