Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Rendering Tease New Olympus Camera

A series of concept designs show what the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, designed with the help of Olympus, might look like.

These renderings, created by graphic designer Technizo Concept for LetsGoDigital, are based on recent reports that Samsung and Olympus are partnering for the Galaxy S22. The prospect of a veteran cell phone company and a camera company joining forces is exciting, especially when one takes into account other rumored information about the Galaxy S22's camera and design.

It's hard to miss the Olympus-branded 200MP camera in these photos. While a camera of this resolution sounds absurd, it has already been rumored that Samsung is working on a 200MP camera. In fact, the rumor that the ZTE Axon 30 Pro uses a Samsung camera with this resolution suggests that it may already be ready for production.

Samsung already produces the massive 108MP camera found on some flagships that helped propel the Galaxy S21 Ultra into the top ranks of our best camera phone guide. 200MP camera, with or without Olympus involvement. Regardless, this megapixel-focused photographic philosophy would be a logical evolution.

Rumor sources do not know what the Olympus/Samsung partnership will look like; based on partnerships between the OnePlus 9 series and Hasselblad, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Leica, and many other companies, it is likely that color accuracy and the ability to capture post-processing to help bring the image closer to the subject.

The wording of this rumor leaves open the possibility that a special edition of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be the first phone with an Olympus-enhanced camera rig. This is expected to launch much earlier than the Galaxy S22, in the fall of this year; the Galaxy S line has historically been more focused on photography than Samsung's foldable phones, but a limited edition foldable phone is an impressive way to announce a major corporate partnership sounds like a platform.

The rest of the design takes cues from the current Samsung Galaxy S21 series. This is most evident in the camera bumps that flow over the side rails. But it is also in the flatness of the display, something Samsung has returned to after pursuing curved edge screens. According to previous leaks, Samsung will introduce an under-display selfie camera on its flagships in the near future.

A more down-to-earth feature is that there will also be an S Pen, which is tied to compatibility with the Galaxy S21 Ultra's stylus.

The Galaxy S22 will likely be released in January or February of next year, given Samsung's product release habits. If Samsung and Olympus team up, we may know sooner than that. But it will be next year before we can test the Galaxy S22 and see if it can take back the crown of best Android phone from the OnePlus 9 Pro.
