The Chevy Silverado EV promises a spectacular 400-mile range - what you Need to Know

[but General Motors announced that it will build an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck with a range of about 400 miles on a single charge.

Chevrolet tweeted a brand new teaser video of the Silverado with an electric shimmering across it. However, the company stated that it is "the first ever electric Silverado full-size truck."

Given that the Chevrolet Silverado is GM's best-selling vehicle, its exterior design is unlikely to change much.

The muscular and bulky front will likely be powered by an electric motor rather than an internal combustion engine, and the lithium-ion battery pack will likely be spread across the truck's chassis floor to help distribute weight.

No word yet on a release date or potential price for the electric Silverado. However, given the growing pressure on automakers to electrify, or at least adopt hybrid systems, one can expect to see an electric Silverado sooner rather than later.

Ford is already working on an electric version of its iconic F-150 pickup truck, which will be released next year. That means Chevrolet is preparing an electric rival to figuratively rock the fenders.

Tesla's Cybertruck is also slated for release later this year or early 2022, adding another electric truck to the mix; GM is also developing an electric Hummer, and American roads may soon be flooded with electric trucks.

Pickup truck enthusiasts may scoff at the idea of an electric Silverado. But thanks to the instant torque provided by the electric motor, it may win the approval of those who want a truck that feels powerful enough to jump off the line with any load, from logs and hunting equipment to a clutch carrying a child.

As the year progresses, more details about the electric Silverado will be revealed. And while it may not have the mystique of an Apple car, it could become one of the most attractive mass-market EVs on U.S. highways.
