The Oculus Rift S is Dead — here's what to buy instead

It appears that Oculus Rift S inventory will not be replaced and will effectively be "discontinued."

A Facebook representative told UploadVR that the social network does not plan to sell the Rift S this year, adding: "Generally speaking, once the channel's inventory sells out, it will not be replenished in the future."

The Oculus Rift S currently occupies second place on our best VR headset list, offering built-in room tracking, solid touch controls, and an extensive game library for $399. It's an impressive VR headset and the successor to the headset that basically brought VR into the 21st century. However, unlike the Oculus Quest 2, our top VR headset choice, it requires tethering to a gaming PC.

Also, in many ways, the Quest 2 outperforms the Rift S.

The Rift S has a much higher display resolution than the Quest 2. The latter has a sharper display resolution, but the Quest 2 offers a higher refresh rate and a self-contained VR experience, whereas the Rift S requires a PC connection.

Although these headsets offer different types of VR experiences, an optional cable allows the Quest 2 to be connected to a PC, effectively making it an alternative to the Rift S. As such, the Quest 2 definitely makes the Rift S a bit pointless.

If the Rift S is in its twilight years and available at a good price, it is worth getting. But if not, Tom's Guide has the Quest 2 as its VR headset of choice. For a selection of U.S. and U.K. retailers selling this great VR headset, see our guide to where to buy the Oculus Quest 2.

As for what's next for Facebook and VR, it will continue to build on the Oculus ecosystem. And while rumors point to an Oculus Quest 3, we won't see it until at least 2022, given that Quest 2 just launched in late 2020.

We can toast to the Oculus Rift S and its solid VR headset offering for those with powerful PCs. But we can also keep an eye on the horizon to see what happens next with the Oculus Quest 2 and its potential successor.
