Tim Cook Teases Apple Car in New Interview

We may not know much about what the Apple Car will ultimately look like. Thanks to various leaks and information about Apple's planned autonomous car, we can speculate. Until now, however, Apple has been tight-lipped about what the car will look like and what it will offer.

Apple CEO Tim Cook appeared on a recent episode of Kara Swisher's "Sway" podcast to discuss a variety of topics, including Apple's augmented reality plans. In that interview, however, Cook called autonomous vehicles "in many ways" robots and hinted at the next car. He noted that "there's a lot that can be done with autonomy," and said, "Let's see what Apple does."

"We're investigating so many things internally," Cook said.

"Much of it will never see the light of day. I'm not saying that one won't."

"I'm not saying that one won't.

Cook did not elaborate on whether Apple is working hard on the actual car or on the technology that will allow the car to move autonomously, but the Apple CEO did offer a nugget that could be taken to mean that the company is working on the whole package shared. [We love integrating hardware, software, and services and finding their intersection. That's what we love to do." And we love owning the key technologies around it."

Rumors about the Apple Car have been swirling for several years; after acquiring autonomous car startup Drive.ai in 2019, the company has been expected to drop some concrete news about its car plans at some point, but Apple's acquisition of an employee from Tesla No significant news has surfaced yet, even after Apple brought in additional employees from Tesla and appeared to have bolstered its talent pool.

Most Apple Car rumors predict that the Apple-designed car will not appear until 2024.
