The Genesis X EV concept looks like an electric Dodge charger from the future

Genesis, Hyundai's luxury car division, has unveiled its new electric car concept, the Genesis X. It looks like a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle with an EV label on the back.

With the X, Genesis is promoting environmental sustainability. Not only is it an electric vehicle, it uses upcycled materials to reduce its environmental impact. Unfortunately, no 0-60 times or other performance metrics were presented. This means that it has not yet been determined if this car or its derivatives will be produced.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Genesis chose a digital motor show to showcase the Genesis X. While the 3D rendering is limited because it is done within a browser, it is still an impressive demonstration. However, do not expect Forza-level quality.

A distinctive feature is the two-line headlight motif that extends across the front fenders and throughout the car.

"The Genesis X Concept is the ultimate vision of athletic elegance, the unique design language of Genesis," said Sang Yup Lee, head of global design at Genesis, in a press release. The distinctive Two Lines theme and sustainable luxury will be the blueprint for the futuristic design and cutting-edge technology that Genesis intends to employ in future models," said Sang-Yeob Lee, Genesis' Global Head of Design, in a press release.

The car will be the first of its kind in the United States.

The car is a two-door GT coupe, but it is far from a small car. According to CNET's Daniel Golson, who was able to see the car in person, "The real thing is huge and very imposing. It's chunky and boxy, with a "super-long, low clamshell hood," which is why it looks more like a futuristic Dodge Charger than an EV. It's definitely not the kind of thing a company like Tesla would design. The bubble hood is so large that one might think there is a V8 engine under it.

Bucket seats and four-point seatbelts mean that the Genesis aims to impress the enthusiast crowd. However, given that sports car sales account for only 1.6% of the total U.S. auto market, it would be surprising if any of these features made it into the final production car.

The interior differs from previous Genesis models. The Genesis X's sports car-like interior is cockpit-style, with all screens and information facing the driver. The center console goes straight to the dashboard, similar to the 2020/2021 Corvette C8. A little impractical, but definitely cool. Also, being a grand tourer, it appears to have rear seats. However, it may only accommodate small children, though.

Upcycled materials are also used for the seats. The woven fabric is made from leather remnants. That patchwork leather is also used for the seat belts, steering wheel, and airbag covers.

The Genesis X is only a concept, but it is a demonstration of Hyundai's capabilities and the reason why Apple was at one time considering the Korean brand to build the rumored Apple Car. While the Genesis X will probably never make it to production, one hopes that some of its design elements will be carried over to an enthusiast EV that can compete with the Tesla Roadster.
