Who won Godzilla vs. Kong? The ending is explained

WARNING: Godzilla vs. Kong ending spoiler alert.

Godzilla vs. Kong is currently streaming on HBO Max after its release on March 31. This monster showdown pits two iconic creatures against each other, and the film's marketing campaign promised that "one of them will go down." Now, does the film live up to its publicity?

Yes, one titan will fall and the other will win (with a few caveats, however). Fans feared that this battle of the monster-verse would be like the 1962 Japanese film King Kong vs. Godzilla. Godzilla vs. Kong was not to be. [Millie Bobby Brown, Brian Tyree Henry, Rebecca Hall, Alexander Skarsgård, and of course the lead CGI monsters in an epic battle for the ages. With the help of his guardians, including the orphan girl Gia, Kong attempts to find his true home, but runs into an enraged Godzilla. Their epic clash is instigated by unseen forces involved in a great mystery deep within the Earth's core.

First, a giant lizard and a giant ape battle in Antarctica. Then it all comes down to a final showdown in Hong Kong.

Seriously, I'm about to spoil the ending, so if you don't want to know what happens, stop reading now.

First, let's talk about the battle in Antarctica. Early in the film, Godzilla attacks the Apex Cybernetics facility, where CEO Walter Simmons (Demian Bichir) believes there is a power source at Hollow Earth, the birthplace of all titans, that could be used to create a weapon to defeat Godzilla.

Simmons recruits Dr. Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård), who convinces Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), Kong's guardian, to lead them to Hollow Earth. When they arrive at the entrance to Antarctica, Godzilla senses his old enemy and attacks.

After a brawl, Kong nearly drowns, but the navy boat turns off all power to trick Godzilla into thinking he has won. Kong barely makes it back to the boat.

Round 1: Godzilla.

In the final battle in Hong Kong, the duel between Godzilla and Kong is more even, thanks to the Hollow Earth axe wielded by the ape. However, Godzilla still overpowers Kong, slashing and stomping his chest with his claws. Godzilla leaves a dying Kong behind. The ape tries to get up but falls, and the film's catchphrase comes true.

Round 2, Overall: Godzilla.

At that point, Kong does indeed appear to be dead. However, Dr. Lind uses the Apex machine to jump Kong's heart. As Kong rises to his feet, Zia convinces him that Godzilla is not the true enemy.

Kong actually joins forces with Godzilla to take on Mechagodzilla, a metal monster created by Apex using the Hollow Earth's power source. Godzilla fires an axe, which Kong uses on Mechagodzilla before ripping off its head.

After the two Titans defeat Mechagodzilla, they fallow each other in alarm. Godzilla returns to the sea, and Kong leaves for his new home on Hollow Earth.

So Godzilla wins a direct confrontation with Kong, but both live to fight another day - and perhaps each other.

Legendary has not hinted at the possibility of continuing "Godzilla vs. Kong" into a sequel, so there is no end-credits scene that teases a future film. However, the ending remains unresolved, so it is possible that the two giants will meet again.

"The Monsterverse is at a crossroads right now," director Adam Wingard told Dread Central. 'If this film is successful, obviously audiences will vote for the monsters. If the film is successful, obviously they will continue to move forward. But it's a good thing there's no post-credit scene. Just because there is a (shared) universe doesn't mean we have to do everything Marvel is doing. And ultimately, I think it's better not to frame yourself in the sequel."
