Go over the Apple car, Google has a strange collaboration going with Fiat

Google and Fiat have had a strange collaboration for quite some time to celebrate the 3.5 million Fiat 500s sold since 2007. What is puzzling is that this new offering is not a flashy new electric car, but a regular old gasoline car, albeit with the addition of a hybrid model.

The best thing about this collaboration is, first, that the car comes equipped with the Google Assistant. Buyers of the Google Car will also receive a welcome kit that includes a Google Hub that allows them to ask the car, equipped with a telematics box, about fuel status and where to park.

Purchasers will be given instructions for pairing the car with the hub at the time of purchase. Once paired, the telematics device will let them know if the car is going too fast. It can also ask for reports on tire pressure and warnings in case of theft. Clearly an interesting idea, and for much less money than buying a Tesla.

Most oddly, the seat covers are center pillars and there is a badge above the wheel arches that says "Hey Google." While the technical tie-in makes perfect sense and may add a unique feature to this car, the branding is a bit odd. Perhaps buyers might want to mount a camera on the roof to pretend it's a Google mapping car.

The car will be sold throughout Europe, with prices ranging from 16,005 pounds (about $22,000) to 21,765 pounds (about $30,000) for the 500 Hybrid. New cars will be available for purchase in April.
