Apple TV2021 leak just revealed a surprise new remote

Rumors continue to swirl about an exciting new Apple TV 2021 remote control for the next generation of streaming hardware, with prominent leakers like Jon Prosser suggesting that a new model with a significantly updated A12X processor The last time the A12X was released was four years ago. Since the last release was four years ago, it makes sense that an upgrade will appear and hopefully a new Apple TV remote control.

According to 9to5Mac, the new tvOS software 14.5 beta 6 reveals a new design recently discovered. However, according to the site, this is a collaboration between cable companies and Apple to create a remote specifically for accessing cable channels, so it is unlikely to be the remote that most people will eventually get.

However, there could still be some value here, as a new Apple TV remote is inevitable at this point. The design introduced has an updated button layout and includes both channel and volume controls, which makes sense if you are operating the cable company's own apps instead of the cable box. However, the return of a more structured click wheel makes a lot of sense given the problems with the touch interface on existing Apple TV remotes.

Anyone who has used the Apple TV 4K, among others, is probably familiar with its shortcomings. Navigating by touch is a good idea, but it is a bit difficult to move around the TV screen with any precision. It is too easy to move your fingers too much or not enough. Not ideal.

The image also shows a dedicated forward and backward controller, which is a godsend, allowing you to run backward a bit without having to try to use the touch interface to go back exactly. Of course, you can also use Siri to navigate, but most people probably don't think about that when they are watching TV, and probably don't even know that you can tell Siri, "What did he just say?" and have it backtrack a bit and repeat the dialogue from the program.

Then there is the issue of the physical design of the current remote control. Sure, they look great, but it is really hard to tell which way is up. If you pick up the remote control in the dark, it is basically symmetrical, so it is hard to tell which is up or down.

Thus, while the leaked design probably won't be the one that will be bundled with the new Apple TV, one would hope that a rethought remote control will be included. For one thing, gaming is a great part of Apple TV, but a touch controller makes it difficult to enjoy it. A few more physical buttons would make the whole experience much better.

Some rumors suggest that Apple will announce the Apple TV 2021 at the April Apple event, but we will have to wait and see.
