Forget Apple Cars - Mercedes-AMG is what you see for killer electric cars

As the Tesla Model S shows, electric vehicles are not slow machines because of the instantaneous power and torque provided by the electric motor. However, some argue that EVs are not as dynamic to drive as internal combustion engines (ICEs). Mercedes-AMD may change that this year.

The German automaker has revealed that it will produce a high-performance AMG version of its eclectic automotive sub-brand, EQ. This means that future EVs from Merck can expect to be tuned to maximize performance and provide a more thrilling driving experience with respect to handling, braking, and cornering efforts. Forget about Apple cars getting all the attention, the Merc is the EV of the year. [AMG is Mercedes' high-performance brand that tunes existing cars for faster acceleration, top speed, and more dynamic handling; AMG cars also receive several design tweaks, from AMG branding to sportier seats, plus several performance-oriented driving modes will be added. [Starting with the AMG E43 sedan and the electric version of the AMG CLS 53. These two models will feature two electric motors that will power the front and rear wheels and will be all-wheel drive.

According to Mercedes, the electric powertrains in these models will be comparable to the current bi-turbo V8 engines found in the Mercedes-AMG GT and other models. Expect these cars to give today's high-end eclectic cars a run for their money, both in the straights and in the corners.

Inspired by the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team, AMG's EV will feature i-Booster braking technology that regenerates energy during braking.

On top of this electric technology under the hood, you may find a series of AMG-specific design tweaks on the reworked EV, like a new radiator grille, spoiler lip and diffuser, arguably making the AMG car more AMG than its standard counterpart channeling a sharper, more aggressive appearance.

But some people are not ready to move away from traditional gasoline-guzzling cars, so Mercedes also details how its E-Performance strategy will introduce electric motors to existing high-performance drivetrains. There will be an AMG car with a V8 biturbo engine up front and a performance-tuned electric motor in the back. The electric motor would more likely be used as an augmentation to the engine, providing extra power during overtaking and exiting corners, rather than as a more environmentally friendly alternative to the ICE.

While Mercedes pushes toward more EVs, including the technology-intensive EQS, it seems unlikely that the brand will leave its performance segment behind.
