Suicide squad trailer just fell- and it's amazing

The first major trailer for James Gunn's Suicide Squad has been released. The footage begins with Peacemaker (John Cena), Bloodsport (Idris Elba), and Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) arguing about rescuing Harley, while Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) tries to get them to cooperate.

Of course - as we can see from the clips released so far - it all goes comically wrong. And Quinn (Margot Robbie, in the role that made "Bird of Prey") proves that she doesn't need saving and is no damsel in distress.

And then we hear the last thing we expected to hear: Steely Dan's "Dirty Work." Yes, director James Gunn is working his "Guardians of the Galaxy" magic again.

Next up is Blackguard (Pete Davidson) removing toilet paper from his crocs in prison. This is just before Savant (Michael Rooker) is injected with an explosive that Waller says can be detonated at any time.

Savant says, "So this is the famous Suicide Squad," and a classic slow-motion montage of a ragtag group of psychics walking en masse past an American flag plays.

But then King Shark (voiced by Sylvester Stallone) appears and things get weird again. Of course, he eats people. And then buckets of foul language come out of Idris Elba's and John Cena's mouths. These are all signs reminding us that this is a red band trailer. Then King Shark tears a man in half.

This is nothing like David Ayer's Suicide Squad. This is no ordinary DC movie. It's like James Gunn being Gunn and making a movie that would be fun to watch in a movie theater.

The only problem is that few of these characters are actually known by name; with the exception of Ms. Quinn, they are all relatively badass DC characters. And while the public will get excited about any action movie (we're still in a sort of drought), there is still a lot to be explained in this film. The original "Suicide Squad" was marketed with the Joker, played by Jared Leto, front and center, but he is nowhere to be found.
