Qualcomm's Snapdragon 780G could supercharge Google Pixel6

With Qualcomm's new chipset, the Snapdragon 780G, mid-range Android phones can get more high-end features.

Designed to replace the Snapdragon 765G and 768G (the former is found in the Google Pixel 5), the 780G includes the high-end It includes a series of features inherited from the Snapdragon 888.

According to Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 780G uses the Kryo 670 CPU to improve processor performance by 40%. The system-on-chip will also improve graphics performance by 50% with the new Adreno 643 GPU.

However, with the new generation of chipsets, the power gains are quite promising. More interesting here is that the Snapdragon 780G will feature the Spectra 570 triple image signal processor (ISP) from the Snapdragon 888.

This processor will allow phones with the 780G to capture three images at a time from the triple rear camera array, enabling better and more flexible photography and better low-light performance. The same will apply to video recording, with HDR10+ video capture. [The Snapdragon 780G should also be compatible with smarter mid-range smartphones.

This is because the Snapdragon 888's 6th generation Qualcomm AI engine is designed to enable the Hexagon 770 processor to deliver 12 TOPs (trillion operations per second) of AI performance.

Therefore, phones with the 780G are expected to have improved AI performance that will lead to improved features such as smart noise suppression during calls and voice command recognition. In addition, the Sensing Hub, adopted from the Snapdragon 888, uses a dedicated low-power AI processor to assist with audio processing.

The Snapdragon 780G also includes the Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF system, which delivers 3.3 Gbps at frequencies below 6 GHz. It also supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth audio capabilities found in the Snapdragon 888.

In short, what this means is that more affordable mid-range smartphones, from the rumored OnePlus Nord 2 to the Google Pixel 6, will be able to choose chipsets with many high-end features but not prohibitively expensive

As a result, phones in the $500 to $700 range should offer improved performance, more capable cameras, smarter features, and better sound and connectivity.

The Snapdragon 780G will be found in a series of smartphones as the year progresses. It may be found in the Google Pixel 5a, which is rumored to be released this spring.
