Apple's AirTags price just leaked — here's what you'll pay

The launch of Apple AirTags has been rumored for some time, but a new leak by Max Weinbach (via Everything Apple Pro) has finally given us some information on pricing.

The AirTags are expected to cost around $39 each, which is a very good start, although it remains to be seen when the AirTags will actually arrive.

If accurate, this leak means that AirTags will be in line for the title of most expensive key finder. The newly announced (but as yet unannounced) Samsung SmartTag Plus is the same price and uses a similar ultra-wideband system to help locate lost items.

Cheaper options include the entry-level Galaxy SmartTags ($30 for one) and Tile Stickers ($40 for two). However, these devices rely on Bluetooth tracking rather than good UWB. This means that their communication range is not very long and their location is not very accurate due to the lack of spatial data.

However, Air Tags have a distinct advantage over SmartTag Plus. Instead of a fob that must be hooked to something, leaked information suggests that the Air Tag will be a circular device that can be attached with adhesives or special attachments. This makes it much more versatile than what Samsung is offering.

AirTags are also outclassed in size by SmartTags, which according to Weinbach will be 6mm (0.2") thick and 32mm (1.2") in diameter. Apple's Tracker is slightly larger than a 50-cent coin and smaller than Galaxy's SmartTags. The Apple tracker is wider and thicker, measuring 39 mm (1.5 inches) across and 9 mm (0.35 inches) thick.

The only question now is when the Air Tag will appear. Rumor has it that it will debut at an Apple event in April, but there has been no official confirmation; given that AirTags were rumored to make an appearance at a number of Apple events in late 2020, anything could happen this time around.

However, if information on pricing and size is already available, AirTags should hopefully arrive soon.
