Stimulus Check Status: What to do if you haven't come yet

More than $127 million in stimulus provided by the Biden bailout has been distributed to American taxpayers, but some non-filers and federal benefit recipients are still waiting for their stimulus checks and may have to wait a little longer.

Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Veterans Administration (VA), and Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) recipients are among those who are eligible for the $1,400 stimulus check but have not yet received it. Many of these recipients are retired or disabled and are not required to file tax returns.

"I had to put off utilities, cable TV, everything," a Florida retiree waiting for his stimulus check told CBS News.

"I had to pay my rent on time."

The IRS has yet to determine when federal beneficiaries who did not file a tax return in 2019 or 2020 and did not enter information into the non-filer tool last year will receive their third stimulus payment.

On Wednesday (March 24), four Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee sent a letter to the IRS and the Social Security Administration requesting that they expedite payments to federal beneficiaries.

The lawmakers also placed the blame for the delay on the SSA, which has reportedly yet to provide the IRS with the proper documentation to issue approximately 30 million checks to federal recipients.

"Some of our nation's most vulnerable elderly and disabled, including veterans who served honorably, are unable to pay for basic necessities while they wait for their payments to clear," the letter states.

According to the IRS FAQ page, beneficiaries do not have to do anything to receive a third stimulus payment. However, those eligible to claim dependents who are eligible for the $1,400 benefit must file a tax return for 2020.

If you have not received your stimulus check, you can enter your information into the IRS Get My Payment tool. This tool may take a while to update or may not give you an exact status, but it is the only way to anticipate when you will receive your check.

If the IRS tool shows your payment status as "not available," it means that the IRS may not yet have received the necessary information from other agencies. In that case, it is best to check again in a few days.

According to the IRS, all recent tax filers whose most recent account transfer information is on file with the IRS should have received their stimulus payments in their bank accounts by yesterday (March 24). Paper checks and debit cards were also mailed yesterday, and IRS officials are likely to mail more in the coming weeks.
