Google has fixed an issue with Gmail and Chrome that affected crashing Android mobile apps. The issue was reported as of Monday and affected a variety of apps, including Facebook and Amazon.

Now it appears that an update to Android System WebView has caused a widespread failure that allows Android apps to display web content. Social media saw an increase in complaints about app crashes between March 22 and March 23, and DownDetector noted a spike in users logging complaints about problems with Gmail and Amazon.

Google has now rolled out a permanent fix for the crashing issue that addresses the previous complaints by updating Chrome and Android System WebView to version 89.0.4389.105.

In a statement to the BBC, Google clarified the issue affecting users, stating:

"We have resolved an issue with WebView that caused some Android apps to crash for some users.Android System Updating WebView and Google Chrome via Google Play should resolve this issue."

Despite these steps, the problem still persists for some. In response, Google offers a separate fix for more stubborn problems, which can be completed by following these steps.

Google has announced that this will resolve most of the issues, and the update procedure should be followed to clear Play Store settings, including auto-update settings and parental control settings.
