Elon Musk says Tesla Model S is undergoing this big upgrade

The seven-seat Tesla Model S may be making a comeback. Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased the next model on Twitter.

Musk, who often tweets at will, said the new "Plaid Model S" (essentially a refreshed version of the current Model S) will have "four doors and seven seats." This is something the Model S sedan once had, but that option has been discontinued.

"The new Plaid S is our best car, it will be the first production car to hit 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds, it has 4 doors and seats 7," Mask tweeted.

In other words, there is no doubt that a seven-passenger Model S is on the way soon. However, this does not mean that it will be a luxurious seven-passenger car, but that it will have two optional jumper seats in the rear of the car.

These jump seats are suitable for carrying seven people in the car, either children or for a short trip. The two extra seats do not seem ideal for keeping people comfortable on long drives. Nevertheless, Mask stated that he has driven across "most of the United States" with two adults and five children in the Model S.

The only oddity here is that the refreshed Tesla Model S (which is available in Long Range, Plaid, and Plaid Plus options) went on sale in January and is currently not available with a seven-passenger option. Therefore, it is unclear if this seven-passenger option will eventually become an option.

Given Musk's reference to the Plaid Tesla S, it is expected that a seven-passenger version will be an option for that submodel. It is also worth noting that a seven-passenger option may eventually be added to the Model S configurator, as the refreshed Model S has not yet been delivered. It is also possible that the seven-seater will come in the form of an aftermarket add-on.

Given the Model S's 1,020 horsepower, the car should offer more than enough performance to easily carry seven people under the hood at speed. Therefore, the option to carry two more people than usual would not detract from the Model S's strong electrical performance.

For now, though, we will have to wait and see if the Plaid Model S will indeed offer the option of carrying two extra passengers.
