OnePlus has finally taken the covers off the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro and announced two Android phones with powerful specs and an improved camera in partnership with Hasselblad.

If you've decided you want a new OnePlus phone instead of a Samsung Galaxy S21 or Oppo Find X3 Pro, you don't have to choose between the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro.

The OnePlus 9 starts at $729, which is more expensive than the $699 OnePlus 8 but a bit cheaper than the $749 OnePlus 8T.

The OnePlus 9 Pro starts at $969, much higher than the OnePlus Pro, which started at $799. However, you get more phone this time around.

Both OnePlus 9 models have AMOLED displays with 120 Hz refresh rates. However, the 6.7-inch OnePus 9 Pro's 6.7-inch display is not only slightly larger than the 9's 6.65-inch display, it also has an LTPO panel.

This means that the refresh rate can be reduced from 120 Hz to just 1 Hz if a higher refresh rate is not needed. This helps reduce battery life. In fact, in our tests, the 9 Pro was 11 minutes shorter than the 9, probably because it uses a QHD+ resolution panel, while standard phones get by with FHD+ resolution.

Both the OnePlus 9 and onePlus 9 Pro have the same 16MP front-facing camera with an f/2.4 aperture, but the major change is found in the rear camera array.

Developed in collaboration with camera specialist Hasselblad, the OnePlus 9 has a 48MP main camera with a Sony IMX689 sensor, a 50MP ultrawide camera with a Sony IMX766 sensor, and a 2MP monochrome camera.

Comparatively, the OnePlus 9 Pro's quad rear camera array consists of a 48MP main camera with a high-end Sony IMX789 with optical image stabilization, the same 50MP ultrawide and 2MP monochrome cameras, and an 8MP tele camera The 9 Pro is the first camera in the world to feature an 8MP telephoto camera. This gives the 9 Pro not only a zooming advantage over its standard sibling, but also a better main camera sensor.

In fact, there is no difference in photography performance between the two models; the OnePlus 9 offers significantly better image processing and photo results than its predecessor. However, the OnePlus 9 Pro, with its additional camera and improved main camera, delivers photography that, according to our tests, is on par with the best Android phones, making it a phone worth considering if you want to take impressive photos.

Both models can shoot video up to 8K at 30 frames per second and s[protng slow motion video capture.

Both models are powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset and 8 or 12 GB of LDDR5 RAM. Not surprisingly, both models performed similarly in our tests.

In Geekbench 5, the OnePlus 9 recorded a multi-core score of 3,618 and the 9 Pro a 3,685.

In 3DMark's Wild Life Unlimited test, the OnePlus 9 scored 5,726 and 34.4 frames per second. The OnePlus 9 Pro also achieved 34.5 frames per second with a score of 5,755.

The difference here is minimal, so the 9 Pro is unlikely to see a significant performance advantage over the standard 9. Additionally, both models have 128GB or 256GB storage options.

Both OnePlus 9 devices have a 4,500 mAh battery pack; in a test of endless web page reloads over a 5G connection, the OnePlus 9 Pro lasted 10 hours and 40 minutes at 120Hz.

The OnePlus 9 lasted a bit longer, 10 hours 51 minutes. Neither model lasted long enough to make our best smartphone battery life list.

Both models support 65W Warp Charge wired charging. However, the OnePlus 9 Pro has access to 50W wireless charging with Warp Charge 50, while the OnePus 9 has to make do with 15W Qi wireless charging.

However, there are no losers here, as both models last longer and charge much faster for their specs and displays.

Given that both OnePlus9 models are upgraded across the board, you can't go wrong with either. Though a bit more expensive than the previous model, the OnePlus 9 Pro in particular offers more than the 8 Pro.
