LG Phones Could Be Dead — Here's Why

LG has been trying to sell its cell phone division, but there appears to be little interest.

According to a Bloomberg report interpreted from an article by Korean publisher DongA, LG had been in talks with Volkswagen AG and Vietnam's Vingroup JSC about a possible sale; according to DongA, talks over the sale of the cell phone division have ended. This gives little confidence in the future of LG's rollable phone, which was unveiled at CES earlier this year.

LG's CEO promised to rebuild the company's smartphone business in 2020, but continued competition from Apple, Samsung, and China seems too much for the Korean manufacturer.

According to DongA, LG has shelved the release of smartphones in the first half of 2021 for now. This includes the much-hyped rollable phone. Earlier this month, it was also reported by Korean publication Chosun that LG's V60 has been postponed indefinitely.

LG will probably issue an official statement to its employees within the next month.

This does not mean that LG will completely exit the smartphone supply chain. Currently, LG is one of the main suppliers of flexible OLED displays to Apple. It also supplies panels to other cell phone manufacturers.

There has been much debate as to why LG has been unable to gain a foothold in the competitive world of smartphones; like YouTuber Mrwhosetheboss, LG's inability to stick to one concept or design decision has done Some have argued that it has done little to establish loyalty.

LG has introduced cool phone ideas like the rotating display found on the LG Wing and the modular design of the LG G5, but none of these ideas stick to future iterations. As a result, cell phone buyers will never see version 2 of these ideas, and LG's unique phones will be left in limbo.
