OnePlus9Pro can have the best phone display ever — here's why

The OnePlus 9 Pro has already completed its first tests, and the results are incredibly promising: the OnePlus 9 Pro offers "top-of-the-line" brightness and color accuracy while consuming less power with a refresh rate scalable to 1Hz.

This is according to testing by DisplayMate Labs (via PCMag), which tested the OnePlus 9 Pro prior to the March 23 launch event.

OnePlus' hope is that the OnePlus 9 Pro will be known for its dynamic refresh rate. The display can shift between 120Hz and 1Hz as needed, which will optimize the phone's battery life. This is because it is necessary to operate at 120 Hz even though there is no need to do so.

But that is far from what makes DisplayMate Labs' display on the OnePlus 9 so great; when interviewed by PCMag, Ray Soneria, the head of the lab, said the phone is "impressive and amazing, with textbook It is a world-class smartphone display with perfect calibration accuracy and performance, visually indistinguishable from perfection."

The OnePlus 9 Pro features what is called "Fluid Display 2.0." This is a Samsung OLED panel that OnePlus has optimized and tweaked to fit its needs. It measures 6.7 inches and has a QHD resolution.

OnePlus has also added low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) technology to the display. This allows for tremendous refresh rates while minimizing the power leakage issues found in other OLED displays. The company promises that the new screen will reduce power consumption by 50% without compromising the smoothness of the 120 Hz refresh rate.

One of the problems OnePlus has had in recent years is visibility in bright locations. The phone itself has offered brighter displays, but still cannot match some rivals; the OnePlus 9 Pro has a hidden feature to get around this, an automatic brightness setting that can activate a special "high brightness" mode for when there is a lot of ambient light.

In addition to "visually perfect and discernible" color accuracy, the OnePlus 9 Pro is also set to color shift the white point at a 30 degree angle. This is similar to the OnePlus 8 Pro, but better than the Samsung Galaxy S20 and iPhone 12 Max. The screen's reflectivity is also set at 4.4%, the best one could hope for without the scratch-prone anti-reflective coating.

The "Vivid" display mode's color gamut is also displayed at 139% of sRGB, up from 126% on the OnePlus 8 Pro. This is higher than the Galaxy S20 Ultra's 135%, but lower than the iPhone 12 Pro's 143%.

There is also a 360 Hz touch sampling rate for gaming, which OnePlus promises will make synchronization up to six times faster. In addition, the OnePlus 9 pro has all the usual display features, including a blue light reduction mode, HDR10+ with a wide color gamut, automatic color temperature adjustment, and the ability to work with polarized sunglasses.

The OnePlus 9 launch event is scheduled for March 23, and OnePlus is sure to have more to say about the OnePlus 9 Pro and its display capabilities.
