iPhone 13 rumors continue to surface, and we hope they are true: a new report claims that the fingerprint sensor, which disappeared from Apple's phones with the 2017 iPhone X, will make a comeback with the iPhone 13.

Not only will Touch ID be on the iPhone 13, but a report from Barclays (via 9to5Mac) claims that it will also be found under the phone's display.

This is not the first time we have heard rumors of Touch ID making a comeback; Bloomberg issued a similar report in January. However, Barclays' report claims to be based on conversations with various suppliers over the past few weeks.

The addition of an under-display scanner to Touch ID would be a major shift in iPhone design; since 2017 we have been using Face ID to unlock our phones, but now that the coronavirus pandemic has made us wear masks, that convenience is has declined.

While Apple continues to shy away from fingerprint readers, rival smartphone makers are adding in-display sensors; Samsung's flagship phones, including the Galaxy S21, have in-display sensors, as do several other top Android phones have in-display sensors.

According to MacRumors, a research note by Barclays analyst Andrew Gardiner and three colleagues claims that the new iPhone 13 model will also have a smaller notch. This should make the iPhone 13 display more immersive.

According to Barclays analysts, the iPhone 13 will feature a "more tightly integrated version of the current structured light system" to allow for the notch reduction. The notch has changed little since it debuted on the iPhone X to house the sensor that enables Face ID.

Additionally, the iPhone's LiDAR scanner will remain a feature of the iPhone 13 Pro model only, just as it is on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

A smaller notch, enhanced security with Touch ID and Face ID, and whatever additional features Apple decides to introduce with the iPhone 13 may make the next generation iPhone more innovative than previous models. It all depends on what Apple announces in the coming months.
