Google Search just got a big upgrade - here's how it works

Google Search is trying to give users a broader view with its new "Full Coverage" feature.

You may have already found the Full Coverage option in your Google News feed, but this service will be available from US English when using Google Search to search for terms related to developing news articles.

A multi-colored button will appear below the carousel of cards at the top of the search page and on the last card after scrolling through all the top articles. Clicking this button will bring up multiple news media articles on the same topic that have been deemed relevant by Google's algorithm. This makes it easier to see how a story has evolved over time and to find commentary and more local stories.

If this sounds familiar, that's because Google promised to introduce this feature to Google News in 2018 and implement it in search starting in 2019. Yes, it has been a long time coming.

The feature is designed specifically for long-term stories, not one-off events. In a blog describing the feature, Google News Product Manager Itamar Snir cites coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the US presidential election, and the Super Bowl as examples of topics that will receive full coverage treatment.

Google claims that all users searching for the same thing will get the same full coverage articles. This is good news if you value getting a wide range of different perspectives and opinions on a topic, rather than getting opinions from the same handful of sites over and over again.

If you are outside the U.S. or do not speak English, Google says the feature will be available "in the coming months." So while UK readers have been waiting for years for full coverage to appear, they may still have to wait a little longer.
