Here's a first look at Apex Legends running on Nintendo Switch

The popular battle royale game Apex Legends is coming to Nintendo Switch this month, and a new gameplay trailer gives us our first glimpse of how the game will look on Nintendo's console.

Unsurprisingly, the game looks almost identical to "Apex Legends," which we've been playing since its initial launch in 2019, with a few graphical caveats, of course.

From the trailer, it is clear that the resolution of the online shooter has been reduced. This is not a surprise, as this is common when games are ported to the less powerful Switch. It's a trade-off for playing on the bus or in bed.

The big question, which the trailer unfortunately doesn't answer, is what the frame rate will be: in a first-person shooter like Apex Legends, split-second reactions can make the difference between winning and losing, so a consistent frame rate is an absolute requirement.

While it is unlikely that the Switch will match the silky smooth 60 fps of the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X versions, we are very hopeful that the Switch version of Apex Legends will at least achieve a steady 30 fps.

Aside from the expected graphics and performance downgrade, this is a fully functional port of the game. Cross-play is also possible, allowing Switch players to squad up with friends playing on other platforms. Unfortunately, however, there is no cross-progression, so ranks earned from previous play cannot be carried over to the Switch.

Developer Respawn Entertainment has given both new and returning players plenty of incentive to download the game on Switch. Those who play at launch will receive a Legendary Rarity skin for their Pathfinder character and will automatically unlock the first 30 levels of the Season 8 Battle Pass. In addition, XP will be doubled for the first two weeks after launch.

Apex Legends will launch on the Nintendo Switch on March 9 and will be free to play as on other platforms.
