This Oculus Quest2 app makes the best VR headsets even better

You can now stream your favorite PC VR-only titles to Oculus Quest 2 again without having to sideload the Virtual Desktop app.

Guy Godin, the developer of Virtual Desktop, finally received approval from the Oculus Quest store 20 months after the software was removed at the behest of Facebook. 2 weeks ago, Godin had Virtual Desktop resubmitted it to Facebook's new App Lab non-store distribution method and received approval. Interestingly, Facebook approved Virtual Desktop on the main Oculus Quest store, not the App Lab. As a result, you can now get it for $19.99.

Virtual Desktop allows users to stream PC-only VR titles to their Oculus Quest units. It can also be used to browse the Internet, watch movies, and run other apps on your desktop.Virtual Desktop also supports Bluetooth peripherals such as a mouse, keyboard, and gamepad. Think of this as bringing your PC into Quest and providing a second desktop experience. And given that the Oculus Quest 2 is already at the top of the list of best VR headsets, this puts it further ahead of the competition.

When Virtual Desktop first launched in 2019, it could not stream PC VR games. After Godin added that feature, it estimated that 40,000 users rely on the app to stream games every day. Facebook sent Godin a removal request, stating that it wanted to "deliver a consistent and pleasant experience to our customers." This led Godin to provide a patch in SideQuest, a third-party application to facilitate side-loading of content.

Until Facebook allowed this feature in the Quest store, users could only sideload the patch to their Quest unit; Godin initially submitted the wireless PC VR streaming patch to Facebook's App Lab on February 10. It is now available without having to be added to Quest.

The biggest change in version 1.20 of Virtual Desktop is the removal of the "need for a patch to stream PCVR games". The new version also adds multi-account support for the Streamer app, the ability to set up automatic screenshot transfer to the desktop, and various other enhancements. Most importantly, you can enjoy your favorite games like Half-Life: Alyx wirelessly on your Oculus Quest.
