Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Leak Tips 6 Core AMD Ryzen CPU

According to new leaked information, the upcoming Surface Pro 4 is set to get a major power boost.

According to Surface Pro 4 benchmarks purportedly released by Geekbench, Microsoft is currently testing a new 6-core CPU that is expected to utilize AMD's latest processing technology.

According to Geekbench revealed by Notebookcheck, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is expected to be powered by a Renoire-based AMD Ryzen APU. Microsoft attempted to score points with the previous generation Ryzen 5 3850U Surface Edition processor by posting it in the benchmark under the radar of lurkers. However, this processor was a four-core chip, while the one tested had six cores. Therefore, the Surface Laptop 4 will likely use a Ryzen 5 4600U instead.

Unlike the standard Ryzen 5 4600U chip, it appears that Microsoft may get some custom chip from AMD; according to Geekbench, the APU in the Surface Laptop 4 has a 100 MHz higher boost clock and is expected to have The APU in the Surface Laptop 4 will have a 100MHz higher boost clock and will have seven compute units (CUs) compared to the expected six CUs.

If not the Ryzen 5 4600U, Microsoft could have procured the Ryzen 5 5500U instead; the Ryzen 5 5500U is also a multi-threaded 6-core APU with a GPU-on-chip with seven CUs. Both chips are relatively similar, but the Lucienne-based Ryzen 5 5500U has some newer optimizations.

As with past Surface Laptop models, users can expect a sleek design in a 13- or 15-inch package. This year's models are expected to include a Thunderbolt 3 port and an upgraded display.

The Surface Laptop 4 was supposed to be released last fall, but never arrived; it was likely delayed due to manufacturing disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. According to our sister site Laptop Mag, the Surface Laptop 4 is expected to be released in April. While this is speculation, each new leak suggests that it will be released sooner rather than later.
