LG Rollable Phone Is Not Dead – LG Is Weighing Rumors

After rumors circulated that LG's rollable phone had been canceled, the company is holding its own. Apparently, no decision has been made yet, and the phone is in limbo.

These rumors arose after speculation that LG might exit the phone business. While the undecided fate of the phone is not particularly good news, there is still a chance that the LG Rollable will appear later this year as originally promised.

Rollable phones could be the next big thing in the cell phone industry, serving as an evolutionary version of the foldable devices we have been seeing in the past few years. Instead of opening on their own, foldable phones only have a mechanism to spread the screen evenly. This means they don't have to worry about hinge breakage or screen creases.

LG is not the only company working on rollable phones. Both Samsung and Oppo are working on their own initiatives, but so far LG is the only company promising to let us buy one. Of course, we were quite upset when we heard that the phone might be cancelled thanks to the financial difficulties facing LG's smartphone division.

However, LG told The Verge that no decisions have been made regarding the release of the Rollable or the future of LG's smartphone division. While that's not as reassuring as the additional promise that the phone is still coming, it's not the end of the world just yet.

It would not be a huge surprise if LG exited the smartphone industry altogether. The company has struggled to compete in recent years, and LG's smartphone business has reportedly lost about $4.5 billion over the past five years.

However, as The Verge points out, rumors about Rollable's uncertain future stem from a change in the phone's manufacturing schedule. Yonhap News reports that LG had told suppliers that the phone was on hold and that they could request reimbursement for their development efforts.

However, delays are not cancellations, and it would not be surprising to hear that the phone will not be coming as soon as LG has promised. After all, rollable designs are brand new, and any time you're trying something that hasn't been done before, you're bound to run into problems. The failure of Samsung's first Galaxy Fold is proof of this.

One can only hope that the LG Rollable sees the light of day, and before LG's smartphone business goes under completely. But if that doesn't happen, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3 will sustain us until someone actually sells the Rollable.
