Microsoft Office is finally right on the iPad

Microsoft Office is a perfect fit for the productivity-oriented iPad Pro 2020. After years of waiting, it has now truly arrived on Apple's tablet. And it looks like it's the right Office for us.

Microsoft has finally integrated Word, Excel, and PowerPoint into one app. And these apps are also optimized for the iPad.

This follows years of iPad users either settling for siloed applications or running the iPhone version of Office for Windows on their iPad. No one knows why it has taken so long.

Microsoft, in a natural move, introduced bonus Actions tools. For example, there is a PDF creation and editing tool, which allows users to easily create PDFs from photos taken with a camera. The Notes app had a similar feature, but it was always a bit buried. And of course, you can also sign PDFs using the Apple Pencil.

It also has a text recognition tool to extract text from images, so you don't have to handwrite an entire document you already have.

Those who prefer to use only the stand-alone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications can continue to use them. These applications will get the same new features as the Office applications in the future, including mouse and trackpad support (added in October 2020).

The apps are free to use, but an active Microsoft 365 account is required to use all the expected features; Office for iPad can be downloaded here.

Continued support for the iPad with productivity-focused applications is exactly what is needed if the tablet is to become an alternative to the laptops Apple sells. Thus, those with an iPad Pro and its Magic Keyboard will have even less reason to think about a laptop.
