Oculus Quest 2 Killer Upgrade just confirmed by Facebook

The Oculus Quest 2 could be getting a major upgrade: a 120Hz refresh rate.

TechRadar reported that Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Reality Labs, in an Instagram Q&A, in answer to a question about whether the Oculus Quest 2 will be upgraded to a 120Hz refresh rate reported that he literally gave the thumbs up.

The Oculus Quest 2 now features a 90Hz refresh rate after a software update last year that improved the 72Hz refresh rate. [In fact, the Quest 2 is our top pick for our best VR headset list. However, an improvement to 120Hz would make it even smoother and potentially avoid the motion sickness issues that can occur when wearing a VR headset for extended periods of time for some people.

The Oculus Quest 2 already supports 120Hz refresh rates, but that requires VR apps and games to run at 120 frames per second; the Quest 2 is not a powerful external gaming PC, but a Qualcomm Snapdragon Given that it is an all-in-one VR headset that relies on a system-on-chip, such a frame rate is unreasonable for Quest 2.

Nevertheless, it is likely that 120Hz apps will be available for Quest 2. Graphic fidelity may be sacrificed to achieve the higher frame rates needed to play comfortably at 120Hz. For some, however, a smoother experience may be worth the trade-off.

A combination of software updates and Facebook getting developers to develop apps that support 120Hz will probably be key to unlocking this higher refresh rate for Quest 2. However, since Quest 2 already supports the refresh rate, and especially since Quest 3 is still a couple of years away, there seems no reason why Facebook would not enable it.
