Windows10 just stole the best macOS features, but there's a catch

Microsoft and Samsung have been doing a lot of joint work over the past few years with the goal of making Windows 10 work better with Android devices. In particular, those made by Samsung.

The latest to emerge from that collaboration is a quick sharing app that makes file transfers between devices easier.

Aggiornamenti Lumia discovered that an all-new Quick Share app has appeared in the Microsoft Store, promising wireless sharing of files between Windows 10 and "Galaxy phones and tablets." This includes photos, documents, and anything else you want to transfer from your phone to your PC.

Quick Share is similar to Apple's AirDrop, something Windows users have long missed; Android 11 may have its own take in the form of Nearby Share, but the rollout is slow and integration with the desktop version of Chrome is not great. [But the drawbacks are common. The app can only be used by Samsung Galaxy owners and requires Samsung's OneUI 2 software to be running; just like running Android apps on Windows or using DeX, properly linking Android and Windows 10 It seems that linking Android and Windows 10 properly, just like running Android apps on Windows or using DeX, is a perk that only Samsung owners can enjoy.

Of course, Quick Share itself is a Samsung app and has already been present on Samsung devices for several months. It makes sense for Samsung to develop such an exclusive benefit.

The purpose of Quick Share was to share content with other devices, including those that support Samsung's SmartThings smart home ecosystem. Clearly, the ubiquity of Windows 10 means that more people will be able to take advantage of it themselves.

It is just too bad that this sort of thing is not available on other Android devices. Perhaps Microsoft should consider partnering with Google so that a link between Windows and Android can be developed at source.

We hope so. For the time being, however, Samsung Galaxy owners are about to get another useful feature that will make their choice of phone even more worthwhile.
