Apple WWDC2022 rumors, iOS16, MacBook Air, and everything to be expected

Apple WWDC2022 rumors, iOS16, MacBook Air, and everything to be expected

Apple's annual developer conference, WWDC 2022, kicks off today (June 6). We will be keeping you up to date with news on our WWDC 2022 live blog, so please refer there for all the latest rumors ahead of the event.

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference is where Apple executives will unveil the next generation operating system that powers all of the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV.

Like previous Apple events, WWDC will be held online. The announcement is essentially the starting pistol shot in speculating what major new features Apple will add in 2022.

In addition to revealing the next major feature of the new software, Apple typically uploads a developer beta version of each major OS update immediately after the keynote. A more stable public beta is then released a few months or weeks later, and the final version is released with the new hardware in the fall.

However, we will see some new hardware at WWDC 2022, notably the MacBook Air 2022 and a possible Apple VR/AR headset.

WWDC 2022 begins today, June 6, and ends on June 10. The annual keynote and "State of the Union" videos will also premiere today. The keynote is the more public video of the two; the public video is for developers.

The WWDC 2022 keynote will be the star of the conference. The keynote begins today, Monday, June 6, at 10:00 a.m. PT, 1:00 p.m. ET, and 6:00 p.m. BST; instructions for watching the live stream of WWDC 2022 are below.

The keynote invitation posted above shows five silhouettes in the colors of the Apple logo along with the words "Swiftly Approaching." This is a reference to Swift, the programming language that developers use to create things for Apple's various software programs.

Apple has an Easter egg on its event website, where tapping a notepad on the page with an iPad or iPhone will bring up an AR card with different notepads on it. The AR cards may suggest that Apple is focusing its efforts on mixed reality at this year's WWDC.

Apple Design Awards will also be presented at the 2022 WWDC.

iOS16 will reportedly feature major upgrades to both the Health app and the way iPhone notifications are handled (open in new tab). This is according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman (opens in new tab).

iOS 16 will likely share many of its top features with other Apple OS devices, just as iOS 15 did. For example, Live Text (which allows users to select text in images) and SharePlay (which allows users to co-watch shows and movies remotely) are both Apple features, as are iPhone features. He also teased new Apple apps for iOS 16 in a follow-up report. The following is a summary of potential iOS 16 features.

iPhone owners often brag that their iPhones keep getting updates for years and years. And leaks suggest that iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus over 6 years old may not be invited to iOS 16.

iOS 16 may include a mention of Apple's long-rumored AR/VR headset. We don't know what features this will include, but an official confirmation of the headset would still be great news.

In recent years, the Mac has become more integrated into the Apple ecosystem than ever before. This has happened not only with iPad apps running on Apple Silicon Macs, but also with Universal Control, which allows users to use their Mac and iPad with the same mouse and keyboard.

How will macOS 13 evolve? I'm not sure, but if there is a clear pattern, it is that Apple will continue to provide reasons to stay in the macOS ecosystem.

When we wrote about watchOS 9, we speculated that we should expect health and fitness upgrades, integration with Apple's HomeKit, Apple Wallet, and Apple Fitness Plus. But what are the watchOS 9 features we hope Apple will announce at WWDC 2022?

We're really hoping that the iPhone Health app will have a bigger presence on the Apple Watch; the Apple Watch already collects a lot of data for this app, so this is the perfect home.

The Notes app on the Apple Watch also makes a lot of sense; taking notes on the fly using Siri and checking shopping lists are two big things that several of the TG staff use third-party apps for, so why hasn't Apple done so yet? we wonder.

Also, Apple, let us take a break. Some of us are so dedicated to keeping our fitness apps straight, it's almost stressing us out. Giving users time to rest for a day is very good for their mental health.

This is interesting: iPadOS 15 improved multitasking and widgets finally made an appearance, but many were disappointed by the iPad's resistance to becoming Mac-like.

But now that even the iPad Air 2022 has an M1 chip, WWDC 2022 seems as good a day as ever to announce that the iPad can now run Mac apps.

The good news is that the new multitasking capabilities planned for iPadOS 16 are rumored to include resizable windows for a more desktop-like experience. In addition, a keyboard and mouse connection will allow users to instantly shrink apps for a more laptop-like experience. In other words, with iPadOS 16, the iPad may finally replace the laptop.

While there have been no rumors about what tvOS 16 will offer, two requests have been made: first, whether or not Apple TV can incorporate support for an external webcam. Without it, FaceTime SharePlay would juggle Apple devices.

The second is to introduce a split-view mode from the Mac or iPad. Sort of picture-in-picture, but on steroids; Fubo TV has a multi-stream view, and if you talk to sports fans or anyone who tries to follow more than one channel at a time, they will tell you that this would be a huge boon.

I would also like to see Find My support added to the Apple TV remote control.

WWDC and hardware go together like Apple and Epic Games. That said, people are always building anticipation, and there are two devices that definitely seem to have potential this year.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the MacBook Air 2022 could be announced at WWDC 2022 along with other Macs. The new MacBook Air 2022 will reportedly feature the new M2 chip and come in a wide range of bold color variations. We will have to see the conference to know what will actually appear. For more information, see the main features of the MacBook Air 2022 we expect to see.

Then there is the new Mac Pro with Apple Silicon, this new powerful Mac, teased at the end of Apple's March 2022 event, will probably have many fans in the developer community. Again, no one is saying it will happen, but it would be great.

Apple's VR/AR headset is not screaming for release at WWDC 2022, but it will be interesting to see how much time Apple gives third-party app developers to get their apps ready. While it is unlikely that we will see final hardware at WWDC 202, as recent rumors point to a 2023 release, it is quite possible that Apple will preview realityOS, which is rumored to run on the headset. And the iO6 16 reportedly has many links to Apple's upcoming AR/VR headset (open in new tab).

In addition, we have learned that Apple may file a trademark application for realityOS on June 8. Therefore, it is possible that Apple will give a sneak preview of the AR/VR headset.

Ming-Chi Kuo, however, downplayed the speculation. The analyst argues that releasing the headset and its software too soon would give Apple's competitors a chance to develop copycat products; the New York Times (opens in new tab) reports that Apple's AR/VR headset will not appear until 2023 but reports that we may see AR software news at WWDC in 2022. And Apple's headset may get content from Hollywood heavyweights like Jon Favreau (opens in new tab).

Meanwhile, Mark Gurman (opens in new tab) says WWDC hardware will be for Macs. And while a headset is unlikely, Apple dropped a WWDC Easter egg in the form of an AR card.
