Apple's WWDC 2022 may be for developers, but it is also an important showcase for what's next for Apple's core software. It is also a chance to get a hint of what products will be on the horizon. And even if Apple tends to reserve the product debut for another event, there could even be a surprise hardware announcement.

We're about to find out what this year's WWDC has in store for us: WWDC 2022 kicks off today and runs from June 6 through June 10. And the first day will be a big one, with Apple's WWDC keynote detailing exciting announcements on the software side: iOS16, as well as new versions of macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and tvOS will be announced.

Also expect new tools that developers will be able to use to create near-future apps, perhaps with a focus on augmented and virtual reality, as rumors of the Apple AR/VR headset and RealityOS accelerate. And perhaps the long-awaited MacBook Air 2022 will finally be unveiled.

The Apple WWDC 2022 keynote will take place today, Monday, June 6, at 10 am PT, 1 pm ET, and 6 pm BST.

A series of upgrades and next-generation versions of Apple's major software platforms are expected to be announced.

iOS 16 is likely to be a major showcase, especially with the expected launch of the iPhone 14. Recently, iOS 16 is slated for major upgrades to both the Health app and the way the iPhone handles notifications. In addition, it has been suggested that iOS 16 will offer a new lock screen with interactive widgets. (We have a full run-down of iOS 16 features Apple will likely introduce at WWDC.)

We also expect to see iPadOS 16 likely to best showcase how the iPad can be used as a more capable device for any task; one rumor suggests that iPadOS 16 will introduce a real desktop with resizable windows It has been suggested that it will introduce a desktop and promises to improve multitasking. This could potentially allow the iPad to replace laptops.

The new macOS 13 should also get a lot of attention, and is said to overhaul System Preferences and redesign core apps. while WWDC is not typically a big show for hardware, many Apple watchers have said the MacBook Air 2022 will be at the show to give us our first look at the M2 chip that is expected to power Apple's latest laptop. Below are other key features of the MacBook Air 2022 that are rumored to be included in the new hardware.

Apple should also show off watchOS 9 with various health tracking upgrades and integration with Apple's HomeKit, Apple Wallet, and Apple Fitness Plus. This will be preloaded on the Apple Watch 8 later this year.

So far there are no rumors of tvOS 16. However, expect to see some new features, perhaps allowing smarter program recommendations. Alternatively, Apple may unveil a variety of new series for the Apple TV Plus.

Finally, there are rumors that Apple's AR/VR headset will be announced at WWDC 2022. However, according to the latest reports, it appears that Apple's headset will not be unveiled at WWDC after all. Nevertheless, it would not be surprising to see AR and VR as part of Apple's next generation of software tools. The company has already announced AR trading cards associated with WWDC 2022.
