The Google Pixel 7a is still expected to launch in the coming months, but that hasn't stopped details from appearing online. The latest is a series of renderings developed by experienced leakers Onleaks (aka Steve Hemmerstoffer) and Smartprix (opens in new tab).

It is not clear what information was used to develop these renderings. Some of the earlier renderings in the past used leaked CAD files and other technical documents, while others were based on speculation and conjecture; the fact that Smartprix posted the exact dimensions of the phone suggests that it may have been the former.

The design is not entirely different from the Pixel 6a, which is not a huge surprise. The renderings show the same strip-shaped camera module on the back and the more prominent lens cutout used on both the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel 6a. According to Smartprix, the phone measures 6.0 x 2.87 x 0.35 in. compared to the Pixel 6a is slightly larger than the 5.99 x 2.82 x 0.35 inches of the Pixel 6a.

It makes sense, at least to the casual observer, that the Pixel 7a is almost indistinguishable from the Pixel 6a. After all, it is likely to be Google's cheaper Pixel device, and any major design changes will likely be reserved for a future flagship. That said, we should still see some changes inside.

Early rumors have already suggested that the Pixel 7a could feature some major camera upgrades, including a new telephoto lens. While this seems unlikely, and no such features are apparent from these renderings, stranger things have happened.

There is also a strong possibility that the Pixel 7a will feature the Tensor G2 chip that debuted on the Pixel 7 and will come with Android 13 intact. Perhaps this model will be the first to get Android 14 when it is released, and will have some of the same cost-saving features, such as less RAM and storage than the flagship Pixel 7 series.

That said, we hope Google adds premium features such as a 90Hz refresh rate and stronger battery life, two of the Pixel 6a's biggest drawbacks.

Google has so far revealed nothing official about the Pixel 7a and probably won't reveal it until Google I/O 2023, which is expected to take place in May. Google doesn't have a very good history of revealing unwrapped cell phone secrets, so expect a lot of details to be released on the web by that date.
