Netflix has renewed one show, but that doesn't change the fact that there have been a lot of cancellations recently. Unfortunately, the streaming service has now pulled HBO Max and canceled two movies that were already completed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab), Netflix has canceled two films, The Inheritance and House/Wife. These two films have been completed but will not be available on Netflix. However, this is not the case with "Batgirl" and "Scooby"! However, HBO Max cancelled "Batgirl" and "Scoob!" as a tax break.

"Inheritance" is directed by Alejandro Burgess and tells the story of billionaire Charles Abernathy's 75th birthday. Convinced that someone is trying to kill him, he asks his four children to keep him alive until dawn the next day.

The screenplay is by Joe Russo and Chris Lamont, with Bob Gunton ("The Shawshank Redemption"), Peyton List ("Cobra Kai"), Austin Stowell ("Bridge of Spies"), Briana Middleton ("Tender Bar"), David Walton ("Bad Moms"), and Rachel Nichols ("Continuum").

Danis Goulet's "House/Wife" follows a mother recovering from a terrible accident who moves into a prototype smart home with her family. Behind the scenes, it turns out that an AI is doing bad things. [The film was written by Anna Halberg and Spencer Cohen and stars Alice Braga ("Suicide Squad"), Chris Holden-Reed ("Umbrella Academy"), and Sarah Gadon ("True Detective").

It is not certain why Netflix decided to chuck these two films, especially so late in production. Our best guess is that the streamer decided to cut its losses and recoup its production costs by either avoiding the marketing costs of both films or selling them to a rival service (Disney Plus, Peacock, HBO Max, or someone else).

THR notes that Netflix appears to be trying to maintain a consistent level of spending on films; the cancellations of Inheritance and House/Wife are not indicative of quality, but of Netflix's desire to focus resources on other productions Perhaps they just want to focus their resources on other films. These films include Murder Mystery 2 (with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston), Extraction 2 (with Chris Hemsworth), and The Mother (with Jennifer Lopez).

"Still the Night Away" and "House/Wife" have a chance to live again and are not currently on Netflix's list of discontinued shows. It is unclear when they will appear on another service, but given their relatively low profile, neither film is likely to get much fanfare when that day comes.
