Yes, the 80 for the Brady movie is real and it's based on real Tom Brady fans

The big movie trailers that played during this weekend's NFL live streaming ad break included a trailer for "80 for Brady" that many would not have expected.

The raucous film about a group of friends in their 80s who share a common interest in New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady seems like a rare opportunity for women in their 70s, 80s, and 90s to play leading roles in a Hollywood movie, and a good time.

And the surprising aspect of the story is simple: it's about a group of real-life friends who bond over football, especially touchdown toms. For those on the fence about the film, here's everything you need to know about "80 for Brady" Including which streaming services it will be available on later this year (and when).

"80 for Brady" follows Tom Brady superfans Lou (Lily Tomlin), Trish (Jane Fonda), Maura (Rita Moreno), and Betty (Sally Field) as they go to the biggest American sports game of the year! It's a film about friendship and fandom, about a road trip.

Yes, a trio of Academy Award winners (Tomlin was nominated, but no trophy) have teamed up to tell a humorous story about fans who don't mind the notion of "acting their age."

Throughout the film, things are predictably hilarious, and there is plenty of bawdy humor to be found. Brady plays himself, as well as many other stars, including Billy Porter, Rob Corddry, Harry Hamlin, Bob Balaban, Sara Gilbert, Ron Funches, Patton Oswalt, Retta, and even Guy Fieri.

As Rita Moreno explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live (via Entertainment Weekly (opens in new tab)), the film was fun for the stars. "I simply want to say that my favorite scene in the movie happens in the locker room with the guys," he said. 'I walked into the room and it was a real locker room. And I swear to God, within seconds I was turned on." [80 For Brady will be released in theaters in two phases, first in limited release on January 28. The film will open to the public on February 28.

The term "based on a true story" is rarely applied to a comedy, but as People (opens in new tab) explains, there is a real group of "80+ for Brady" fans united by their love for Mr. Brady and the Patriots. Betty Pensavalle and Elaine St. Martin, along with their friends Anita, Pat, and Claire, made shirts with their group's name and credited game day for keeping their friendship alive.

Max, Pensavalle's grandson who created the shirts, worked in Hollywood and suggested that the idea be made into a movie. Tom Brady sent a video message to Pensavalle, telling him he was interested in making a film of their story.

However, their real story did not include this trip to the Super Bowl--although Pensavalle and her crew must have wished they had been in the 2017 Super Bowl LI that was shown in the film. It was the game in which Brady and the Pats erased a 28-3 behind and defeated the Atlanta Falcons.

Given that 80 for Brady is a Paramount Pictures film, it is expected to be released by Paramount Plus. "Sneak preview" screenings of the film begin on January 28, so based on a typical 45-day streaming window, 80 for Brady is expected to be available for streaming from home by March 14, 2023.
