Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra specification just leaked - and the first 200MP camera sample

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has received a massive specs leak from leaker billbil-kun (opens in new tab) on Twitter, giving all the important details of Samsung's new top phone.

The sources differ, but the information available matches that of the big leak we just saw about the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus specs. It appears that official marketing materials for the Samsung Galaxy S23 are starting to leak.

Starting with the display, it appears that the Galaxy S23 Ultra will have a 6.8-inch QHD AMOLED display covered in Gorilla Glass Victus 2. This is essentially the same as the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but with the less-strong (but still quite tough) Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.

For photography needs, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has a 200MP main camera on the back, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and dual 10MP telephoto cameras with 3x zoom and 10x zoom, replacing the Galaxy S22 Ultra's 108MP main camera. It is said to replace it, but leave the other cameras in place. These four sensors will likely allow it to record 8K video at 30 fps or 4K video at 60 fps.

On the front, meanwhile, a 12MP selfie camera will replace the 40MP sensor on the Galaxy S22 Ultra. While the reduced resolution doesn't look good on paper, we expect Samsung to focus on other parts of the sensor that will improve the overall quality.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra should have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset no matter where in the world you buy it. The Galaxy S22 Ultra used the earlier Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip in the U.S., but in other parts of the world it used the Samsung Exynos 2100 chip, a less powerful SoC than the Snapdragon chip. So while the latest Snapdragon is just a run-of-the-mill upgrade for U.S. buyers, European customers should be excited to have the best chip in a Galaxy flagship for the first time in several years.

Joining the Galaxy S23 Ultra chipset is, of course, RAM and storage. According to the spec sheet, it will come with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM by default, while more expensive versions will have 12GB RAM. Storage starts at 256GB and goes up to 512GB and 1TB. All of these are consistent with what the Galaxy S22 Ultra offered.

Samsung has included the same 5,000 mAh battery in the Galaxy S23 Ultra as the S22 Ultra; 45W wired charging is also the same, but curiously, 10W wireless charging is downgraded from the S22 Ultra's 15W maximum.

Finally, a few miscellaneous spec details: the Galaxy S23 Ultra, like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, has an IP68 rating against water and dust ingress, dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support, and for security It should offer a fingerprint sensor under the display. New this time, however, is Android 13 in the form of ultra-wideband and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, as well as Bluetooth 5.3 support and pre-installed software, One UI 5.1.

Similar to the Galaxy S23/S23 Plus leaks, there is no mention of pricing for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Unfortunately, while the Ultra model may see a price increase this year, the other models remain at the previous model's pricing.

As noted above, a major new feature of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a 200MP camera that replaces the 108MP sensor of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung's newly announced ISOCELL HP2 is believed to be the sensor that will be used in the S23 Ultra, and coincidentally, leaker Ice Universe claims to have photo samples.

What is striking about the purported Galaxy S23 Ultra 200MP shot shared by IU is that it is apparently zoomed in 12x. The incredible amount of detail you get when shooting a 200MP image means that you can crop any part of the image you want and still get a good looking image, even if at this magnification it is starting to look a bit blurry on the big screen.

As pointed out in the comments to IU's post, the Galaxy S23 Ultra's advanced 3x telephoto camera (a carryover from the Galaxy S22 Ultra) becomes a bit pointless when you can crop so freely. With a dedicated lens, the 3x telephoto still has a place for photo geeks, as it can create a different and perhaps preferable look than just cropping pixels from a single high-resolution image. But perhaps we will see Samsung try to remove the lower-magnification of the two ultra-zoom lenses in future phones now that the 200MP camera is able to fulfill its basic role.

Samsung will no doubt release official photo samples and specs at the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S23 Regular launch, which is expected to be announced at Galaxy Unpacked on February 1. It won't be a long wait, but if you want details before then, we have a strong suspicion the leaks will only strengthen in the coming weeks.
