The first benchmark score for the Mac mini M2Pro is included - this is big

[This time we benchmark a MacBook Pro with M2 Max.

The Mac mini M2 got first results in the popular CPU benchmarking tool Geekbench 5 (opens in new tab).

Apple's revamped Mac mini, announced earlier this week along with the MacBook Pro 2023 model, was tested in Geekbench (opens in new tab) in both the M2 Pro configuration and the basic M2 version. The results showed that the new chip outperforms not only the M1 Pro chip in the 2021 MacBook Pro in single-core performance, but also the more powerful M1 Max chip in the same laptop and Mac Studio. [Possible results for the Mac mini M2 and M2 Pro, along with other recent Macs, are summarized in the table below.

In both single-core and multi-core Geekbench tests, the Mac mini M2 beats the Mac mini M1. It also scores similarly to the more expensive M2 Pro model in the single-core test. However, the Apple M2 chip lags far behind non-Pro chips in multi-core scores because it has only 8 CPU cores total, rather than the 12 cores (10 cores on some models) of the M2 Pro.

Compared to previous high-scoring Macs, the Mac mini with M2 Pro outperforms the MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, MacBook Pro with M1 Max, and Mac Studio with M1 Ultra in single-core tests. It also beats the M1 and M1 Max-equipped Macs in multi-core tests, but still loses to the almighty M1 Ultra chip in the Mac Studio.

Apple touted its new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips with the mention of more densely integrated transistors, higher memory bandwidth, and additional CPU and GPU cores. It is clear that, at least in the case of the M2 Pro, it is working, but we will have to wait for more benchmarks to appear and significant real-world testing to see how much the new chips will benefit.

The M2 Pro (or M2 Max) chip gives users the option of even more RAM for improved multitasking (up to 96GB versus 32GB on the best Mac mini), plus all the design and display benefits of the MacBook Pro.
