PlayStation Project Q could be released on May 11 — What We Know

Earlier this week, Sony announced an all-new handheld that can stream games directly from the PS5 at home. Sony promised that the device would be available later this year, but did not reveal a more precise release date. Thankfully, there are new rumors that the handheld may appear in November.

This detail comes from Insider Gaming reporter Tom Henderson, the same reporter who leaked details about Sony's handheld back in April. Reporter Henderson tweeted that Project Q is currently scheduled for release in mid to late November of this year. Presumably the PlayStation earphones will be released as early as the same time.

Henderson did not reveal any details about Project Q, including its price. However, if he is accurate, Project Q will be released just in time for the holiday season and around PS5's third birthday.

The Project Q itself takes the form of an 8-inch LCD tablet with one half of the DualSense controller on each side. It is more or less a PlayStation analog to the Nintendo Switch, but without the ability to play games on its own. As far as we know, this will be a streaming-only device, allowing remote access to games running on the PS5.

Of course, we expect Project Q to be more than just a streaming portal; both the PS5 and PS4 allow remote play to smartphones, and a variety of games can be played without connecting to a DualSense controller You can also get controller grips, like the Backbone One, that allow you to play games without having to connect to a DualSense controller.

There is always the possibility of adding PlayStation Plus cloud gaming to the mix. This feature does not appear to be available on smartphones or tablets, and if Project Q is implemented properly, users may be able to enjoy cloud gaming on the go. However, this is a very big assumption, and Sony has so far announced nothing to that effect.

We'll have to wait and see how this plays out, but you can read everything we know about Sony's Project Q at our hub.
